Our research showed that while grandparents often adapted rules parents put in place regarding digital safety when minding their grandchildren. They emphasised that discussing and agreeing on these rules collaboratively was important.
Grandparents are often very worried about their limited digital capabilities, making them not as confident when looking after their grandkid when digital technologies use is concerned.
Grandparents are often very concerned about their grandchildren becoming addicted, posting harmful content, having access to harmful content, inappropriate ad popups and lack of concentration.
Parents acknowledge that these devices are now part of their child’s everyday life, and that's ok; but that setting rules and finding a balance can often be difficult, and that sometimes rules change based on the situation. As Grandparents you need to think about what the rules might be at your house specifically.
Everybody is unique, and our research showed that grandparents often fell into specific roles when guiding children's digital safety. Our work suggested however that rather than causing conflict, this can allow you as a grandparent to admit when you don’t know much about technology and to play into your strengths.
